There is a surreal quality to the apparently recent discovery by some that Hizbollah is a terrorist organisation. Since the Bulgarians reported this week that last July's murders were indeed carried out by Hizbollah, there seems to have been a shocking realisation that a harmless social welfare organisation turns out instead to be a terrorist gang.
One wonders what those who have only now come to this conclusion have been doing since Hizbollah's foundation in the early 1980s. It is not as if the organisation has only now turned to terror. Violence is at its core. So much for welfare: Hizbollah pioneered the idea of suicide bombings in the Middle East. It is surreal that only after a bombing in Bulgaria have some now accepted that Hizbollah is a terrorist organisation, despite decades of terrorist activity elsewhere. At least now it will be clear just where those who still resist proscribing the organisation are coming from.
The issue is black and white. Arguing against proscribing Hizbollah means supporting the ability of terrorists to fundraise and to use Europe to further their murderous aims.
