The decision to deport Abu Qatada is, of course, to be welcomed. Not just because it will make us safer. It's also been useful in making all too clear the real views of some supposed moderates.
Victoria Brittain could never be described thus, and so her Comment is Free whinge is hardly a surprise. She describes it as "a low moment in British justice" and attributes to, among other things, "casual racism".
Ah yes. The fact that he is one of the most dangerous Islamist preachers in Europe, described by one judge as Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe, and has been convicted in Jordan of a conspiracy to bomb hotels in the Jordanian capital Amman and providing finance and advice for other plots is, of course, entirely irrelevant. But more interesting is the response of Inayat Bunglawala of the MCB, newly minted as a 'moderate', leaving behind the days when he wrote that:
The chairman of Carlton Communications is Michael Green of the Tribe of Judah. He has joined an elite club whose members include fellow Jews Michael Grade and Alan Yentob ... [They are] close friends … so that's what they mean by a “free media”
or described bin Laden as a ‘freedom fighter’.
The 'moderate' Bunglawala apparently believes that Qatada's only crime is that:
Qatada is a Muslim and has a scary beard.
It sort of says it all.
