Give us back a second day

When night falls and Shabbat goes out, I feel a tinge of sadness. My 25-hour rest is over, and it's back to the grindstone.

Last week, as we made havdalah, my heart soared. Finally! We were entering a five-day work week. Since mid-August, what with the summer holidays, Bank Holiday and the High Holy Days, I've only had one full week of work.

But while I could take my computer to France and work part-time on Bank Holiday, observant Jews don't do any work over the Jewish festivals. From mid-September to early October, I was out of the office for seven days.

Back when I was employed by the Jewish community, the festivals were wonderful. I got to enjoy the extra days off knowing my office was closed and that I wasn't losing any days of holiday.
