On November 19 1977 the president of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, visited Jerusalem as part of his trip to Israel. He was the first Arab leader ever to visit the Jewish state.
His trip lasted 36 hours, during which he had an hour-long meeting with Israel's Prime Minister Menachim Begin and addressed the Knesset in Arabic.
The Jewish Chronicle at the time reported this significant trip - which shocked the international community - as a "miracle".
"The miracle has happened and has been witnessed by the world. President Sadat, the Arab leader, who, only a short while ago, was willing, in his own words, to sacrifice a million Egyptian lives to re-conquer the occupied territories, has renounced the use of force to esttle his differences with Israel and has done so in, of all places, the Parliament of the sovereign Jewish State, in its capital, Jerusalem."
