It was number 886 of the 1,564 Czech scrolls which survived the Nazis and was said to have originated in Austerlitz, now known as Slavkov.

Since its provenance was confirmed at a conference 26 years ago, community members have regularly visited the town, forging links with its citizens. Ruth Matiovska, the one remaining Jewish resident, was made an honorary NLS member.

However, the shul belatedly discovered that its scroll was actually number 887 and not from Austerlitz but the small Moravian town of Kamenice nad Lipou, 80 kilometres to the west.

NLS leaders then launched a search for a genuine Austerlitz scroll to reside alongside the other four Torahs used for Shabbat and High Holy-Day services.
