Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid has cancelled plans to attend the UN climate conference in Egypt next week, as election results show Benjamin Netanyahu’s rival coalition set to take power.
President Isaac Herzog will take Lapid's place at the event, representing Israel at the global summit with other heads of government and state.
Lapid had been scheduled to fly to the resort town in southern Sinai on Monday, where more than 90 heads of state will convene between November 6 and 18.
Last month, Lapid said the climate crisis “presents the Israeli economy with exceptional opportunities,” and spoke to the importance of attending the summit.
In March last year, Lapid’s predecessor Naftali Bennett met Egyptian President Abdul-Fattah el-Sissi in Sharm el-Sheikh where they discussed building a regional counter to Iran.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition is set to take power, winning 65 seats out of 120 in the Knesset, ending the rule of the governing coalition that fell apart earlier this summer.
When Netanyahu takes office, it's set to be the 73-year-old’s sixth term in office after stints in the 90s, early 2000s and late 2010s.
