Zac Efron’s song Scream - originally performed in 2008 film High School Musical 3 - has seen a surge of interest on TikTok with fans of the Jewish actor re-enacting the moment his character, Troy Bolton, tries to choose between basketball or music.
TikTok users have been posting videos of themselves in high school or university corridors attempting to recreate the upside-down dance performed by Efron as he sings Scream.
Since the choreography for the original film relied upon a rotating stage, the TikTok recreations tend to fall apart quickly, adding to the hilarity and the chaos.
One video reenacting Efron’s dance, posted by @everythingsr0sie, has been viewed more than 2.5 million times and has over 470k likes. The clip of the song that sheuploaded to make her video has now been used in 490 more videos.

Although the film – which has seen two sequels and, more recently, a TV series – has been labelled embarrassing and cringeworthy, fans of the franchise often lovingly poke fun at the overdramatic nature of many of the characters, with Troy being a frequent butt of jokes.

The song, originally released in 2008 in High School Musical 3: Senior Year, features after Troy and his father, Jack, argue about which college he will attend.
Scream was covered by Joshua Bassett in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, season 4.
Season 4 was released on August 9. Olivia Rodrigo, who played the character ‘Nini’ in seasons 1-3, did not feature in season 4.
