The wife of former Israeli President Moshe Katzav has requested a presidential pardon on behalf of her husband, who was found guilty of rape and sexual harassment last November.
Gila Katzav personally presented the request to President Shimon Peres for approval, according to Ynet news.
The petition, filed with the Justice Ministry today, is based on the premise that Mr Katzav did not receive a fair trial last year.
Mr Katzav, who reportedly expressed no remorse on conviction, is currently serving a seven - year sentence for two counts of rape and harassment.
He is the first Israeli president to serve a prison sentence.
