A website has been created to help Orthodox Jews struggling with addictions to porn, sex or masturbation find support in the Torah.
Guard Your Eyes — which bears the slogan ‘Maintaining Moral Purity In Today’s World’ — offers Torah-inspired assistance for those they term “caught in the shmutz”.
The site offers a huge range of tools to its 10,000-strong online community. It has a strong focus on technical solutions, from web filtering software that will send your browsing history to your rabbi to recommendations on “kosher phone” providers.
Gender-segregated forums provide support, with topics ranging from rabbinical teachings on lust to motivational mantras on how to not “act out”.
Reasons given for abstaining include “you’re damaging your relationship with Hashem”, “it makes you feel miserable afterwards” and “it can be a disgusting mess to clean up”.
For those in need of expert help, there is a hotline for spiritual advisers in the US and Israel, a directory of therapists and a range of Ebooks.
While there are materials on the more traditional 12-step addiction programmes and near constant phone conferences to support those receiving help, some of the advice offered on the website is more controversial.
One section deals with the issue of ‘SSA’, unwanted Same Sex Attraction, with testimonies from those who have found the “straight path home”.
