A crowd-funding campaign for Ukrainian refugees led by Jewish actress Mila Kunis has raised almost $35m.
The star – who was born in Ukraine – and her Hollywood actor husband Ashton Kutcher set up the fund just two weeks ago with a target of raising $30m.
The couple have pledged to donate $3m of their own money.
The fund has already exceeded its initial goal, having raised just under $35m so far.
The biggest single donation to date is $5m from American-Jewish tech billionaire Larry Ellison.
Ms Kunis wrote as “a proud Ukrainian” in an initial post setting up the campaign: “This unjust attack on Ukraine and humanity at large is devastating and the Ukrainian people need our support.
“While we are witnessing the bravery of Ukrainians, we are also bearing witness to the unimaginable burden of those who have chosen safety.
“Countless amounts of people have left everything they know and love behind to seek refuge. With nothing but what they could carry, these Ukrainian refugees are in need of housing and supplies right away.”
On Friday, the couple posted a message on Instagram welcoming the extraordinary response: “More than 65,000 of you stepped up and donated what you could. Now, with your help we have reached our $30 million goal.
“While this is far from a solution for the problem, our collective effort will provide a softer landing for so many people as they forge ahead into their future of uncertainty.”
Born in 1983 Chernivtsi in Ukraine in what was then the Soviet Union, Ms Kunis, 38, moved to the US in 1991.
Her films include Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Black Swan.
She married Kutcher, her former co-star in sitcom That '70s Show, in 2015. The couple have two children.
