Donald Trump has said American Jewish leaders “should be ashamed of themselves” and accused them of lacking loyalty following the wave of criticism of his dinner with antisemitic rapper Kanye West and white supremacist and anitsemite Nick Fuentes at Mar-a-Lago last month.
Amid calls for the former president to apologise, he posted on Truth Social on Friday: “How quickly Jewish leaders forgot that I was the best, by far, President for Israel. They should be ashamed of themselves.
“This lack of loyalty to their greatest friends and allies is why large numbers in Congress, and so many others, have stopped giving support to Israel.”
According to Rolling Stone, Republican Jewish leaders, some of them donors, have been circulating a letter asking Trump to distance himself from West (who now calls himself Ye) and Fuentes, without success.
He had said after the dinner that West "unexpectedly showed up with three of his friends, whom I knew nothing about". He had not heard Fuentes say anything objectionable.
Among Republican politicians who have called on Trump to apologise is his former vice president Mike Pence.
“President Trump was wrong to give a white nationalist, an antisemite and a Holocaust denier a seat at the table — and I think he should apologise,” Mr Pence said in a NewsNation interview.
