Oscar-nominated songwriter Gerry Goffin, who wrote classic songs such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and The Loco-Motion, has died aged 75 in Los Angeles.

Mr Goffin composed more than 50 top 40 songs, writing with fellow Jewish songwriter Carole King. The couple were married in 1959 when Ms King was 17 and divorced nine years later.

In 1975 he was nominated for an Academy Award for the music for the film, Mahogany. He was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1990.

In a statement, Ms King said: "Gerry was a good man with a dynamic force, whose words and creative influence will resonate for generations to come."

"His legacy to me is our two daughters, four grandchildren, and our songs that have touched millions and millions of people, as well as a lifelong friendship."

Mr Goffin was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1939 and had his first hit song - Will You Love Me Tomorrow, performed by the Shirelles - with Ms King shortly after they were married.
