A Sinai terror group operating close to Egypt’s border with Israel has sworn allegiance to Islamic State.
Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, Egypt’s most active terror group, declared their loyalty to Islamic State in a statement last night saying: "After entrusting God, we decided to swear allegiance to the emir of the faithful Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, caliph of the Muslims in Syria and Iraq and in other countries.”
Ansar’s main target is Egyptian President al-Sisi’s regime in Cairo but they have also attacked Israel in the past. In January, the group launched two rockets into Eilat and in August Ansar claimed they had decapitated four Egyptians for spying on Israel.
Egypt’s military has launched an offensive against terror groups in the area, so far destroying 1,500 tunnels into Sinai from Gaza. However, last week a terror attack in northern Sinai killed over 30 soldiers.
