A Russian food company is being criticised for naming its new ice cream “poor Jew”.

Slavitsa in the federal republic of Tatarstan launched the new cone last month, describing it as a “crusty horn” of chocolate and prune flavoured ice cream, topped with peanuts.

“Trying all this tastiness, it turns out that he is not so ‘poor’,” the company’s description of the product adds.

The cone is wrapped in an Israeli flag, complete with a blue Star of David.

The company was previously best known for another product it launched during the previous US administration – a chocolate ice cream cone called “Barack Obama”, which featured a black child on the label.

Leonid Shteinberg, a leader of the Jewish community in the Tatar city of Naberezhnye Chelny, has called for the halt of production and sale of the ice cream, Radio Free Europe reported.

Mr Shteinberg described the Slavitsa company’s latest offering as “racist.”

The office of the Naberezhnye Chelny prosecutor has announced that it is looking into the complaints.
