Russia will not be barred from The Maccabiah Games, despite a string of other sporting bodies announcing a boycott of the country’s athletes, organisers have said.
A Maccabiah source has confirmed that both Russian and Ukrainian delegations are still expected to attend the Israel-based tournament, Jewish News reported.
Maccabiah organisers reportedly said the games are not a political movement and the Russian invasion of Ukraine will not have an impact on them.
They said: “For now, we have no intention of any banning.”
In recent days the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have said athletes from Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to compete at this year's tournament.
Previously, organisers said competitors from the two pariah states would have to compete under a neutral flag and will not be included in the medals table at the upcoming Beijing 2022 games.
IPC president Andrew Parsons said an "overwhelming number of members" had told his organisation they would not compete if athletes from Russia and Belarus were not barred from participation.
Mr Parsons added: "We are very firm believers that sport and politics should not mix.”
Formula 1 has cancelled the Russian grand prix due to take place this September, while UEFA - European football’s governing body - has moved the Champions League final from Moscow to Paris.
The Maccabiah Games are an international Jewish and Israeli sporting event, held in the year following the Olympics.
With 10,000 athletes competing it is thought to be the third largest sporting event in the world.
