Over 600 rabbis from all denominations across the US have declared that they will back President Obama in the forthcoming elections as part of the "Rabbis for Obama" scheme. This is double the number of rabbis who were involved when the group was founded in 2008.
Ira Forman, Jewish co-ordinator for President Obama’s campaign, said: “These rabbis mirror the diversity of American Jewry. Their ringing endorsement of President Obama speaks volumes about the president’s deep commitment to the security of the state of Israel and his dedication to a policy agenda that represents the values of the overwhelming majority of the American Jewish community.”
The chairs of the group are Rabbi Steven Bob of Reform synagogue Etz Chaim in Illinois, Rabbi Sam Gordon of Progressive Chicago-area synagogue Sukkat Shalom and Conservative Rabbi Burt Visotsky who is a professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
