The Czech Foreign Ministry is to host a conference this month as part of efforts to recover property stolen during the Holocaust.

The Immovable Property Review Conference, which will be held at Prague’s Czernin Palace, will be attended by representatives of the 47 countries which have endorsed the Terezin Declaration on Holocaust-era assets. The conference is expected to build on the outcomes of earlier meetings such as the Terezin Declaration and the 2010 Restitution guidelines.

Czech Deputy Foreign Minister Jiří Schneider, who is a co-chair of the event, said: “For more than six decades, we have been facing the challenge of how to secure the social welfare needs of survivors, how to recover or compensate for the confiscated property and how to pass on the legacy of the Holocaust to future generations.“

“Despite the achievements of conferences in Washington in 1998 and in Prague in 2009, and of various other public initiatives, many important issues remain to be addressed.“

Speakers will include former Israeli MP Colette Avital, Terezin survivor Professor Felix Kolmer and former US presidential adviser on Holocaust-era assets, Stuart Eizenstat. The event is orgaised by the European Shoah Legacy Institute and the Forum 2000 Foundation and will run between November 26-28.
