Polish officials have confirmed the death of the oldest known survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Antoni Dobrowolski, who was not Jewish, was sent to the camp in 1942 for teaching Polish children in secret during the German occupation of Poland. When the Nazis invaded, education was suppressed in the country.

He survived not only Auschwitz, which he later described as "worse than Dante's hell," but also Gross Rosen and Sachsenhausen concentration camps in Germany.

Mr Dobrowolski, who worked as a teacher after the war in Debno, is to be buried in the town on Wednesday.

The Nazis killed at least 1.9 million non-Jewish Poles during the Holocaust.
