Obama calls for a ‘meaningful’ deal with Iran at UN

US President Barack Obama welcomed the new Iranian government’s “moderate course” in an address to the United Nations General Assembly today.

He also called for a “meaningful agreement” on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear development and a resolution on the Syria chemical arms issue.

Media reports have speculated as to whether the United States president will publicaly shake hands with his Iranian counterpart, who is due to speak later this afternoon.

President Rouhani had lunch with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today, according to the Iranian leader’s official Twitter account.
