Sidney Harman, the Jewish businessman who bought Newsweek for a dollar last year, has died at the age of 92.

Mr Harman, the Deputy Secretary of Commerce under Jimmy Carter, was diagnosed with leukemia last month.

He died in Washington following complications from his illness. His wife, former Californian Congresswoman Jane Harman, was with him at the time.

Mr Harman, who was born in 1918, made his money originally by selling stereo equipment.
