Six people were killed in the siege at the Chabad centre, including Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka. Their two-year-old son, Moishy, was saved by his Indian nanny, Sandra Samuel, and is being cared for by family in Israel.
The new Chabad envoy, Rabbi Dov Goldberg, vowed he would continue the Holtzbergs’ work. “We are staying at the same centre and will rebuild it even nicer than it was,” he said.
Although the Chabad House would be temporarily based at a different location, “our activities will not stop even for one second”, he added.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Defence Ministry has received an increasing number of requests from New Delhi for technology that can be used in counter-terror operations.
India has also contacted a number of Israeli companies with offices in New Delhi and asked for information regarding hi-tech metal detectors as well as advanced weaponry such as the Tavor automatic weapon manufactured by Israeli Weapons Industries.
“There is growing interest in India since the attacks for Israeli know-how and technology,” a MOD official said, noting that India has been one of Israel’s top weapons customers, with sales reaching approximately $1 billion (£675m) a year.
