Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, has cautioned his ministers against speculating on the Middle East policy of Americn President-Elect Donald Trump before he takes office in January.
Mr Netanyahu said politicians should wait until the formation of the new American administration and allow Israel and the USA to form policy through diplomatic channels and “not through interviews with the media”, the Jerusalem Post reported.
Mr Trump told the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom last week he believed his administration could “play a significant role in helping the parties to achieve a just, lasting peace – which must be negotiated between the parties themselves and not imposed on them by others”.
Tzipi Hotolevy, Israel’s deputy foreign minister, said Mr Trump would provide a “refreshing” approach to the Middle East.
She told the Israeli TV channel i24news the president-elect recognised the polticial shifts in the area and would be less “hands on” than his predecessors.
Mr Trump has previously pledged to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
