Dozens of MEPs are backing a plan to create a special EU envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism.

The European Jewish Association, which is behind the plan, has gained the support of a number of cross-party MEPS.

EJA General Director Rabbi Menachem Margolin said: "Countering antisemitism is as vital for Europe's unity as it for its Jewish community. I have no doubt that first vice-president Frans Timmermans, who is committed to protecting the EU's social fabric, will promote our initiative which is already supported by many members of the European Parliament from across the political spectrum."

The rabbi added: “Many member states do not have adequate mechanisms in place to themselves accurately monitor levels of antisemitism domestically.”
