Photojournalist Eve Arnold has died at the age of 99.

The photographer, who counted among her subjects Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, was the daughter of a rabbi who immigrated to the US from Odessa.

Ms Arnold, although known for her showbiz work, produced influential images of political figures including Margaret Thatcher and Malcolm X. She took pictures of everyone from royals to the poor on the streets of Russia and Afghanistan.

Although she had a long and esteemed career, she started late, taking up photography at the age of 38. It was on her first job, photographing fashion shows in 1950s Harlem, that she caught eye of Robert Capa, the co-founder of the prestigious Magnum photo agency. Ms Arnold subsequently became the agency's first female member.

A Magnum spokeswoman said Ms Arnold, a grandmother of three, died peacefully at home earlier today.
