Bernie Madoff, the billion-dollar fraudster who will spend the rest of his life in prison after a 150-year sentence has been refused the chance to serve in a ‘Jewish jail’.
His lawyer has asked the judge to recommend he serve his term in the medium-security Otisville Correctional Institute, which has an unusually high percentage of Jewish inmates, but the request was refused.
The seriousness of his crime means that Madoff, or Prisoner 1727-054, will most likely serve his time in a tough maximum security jail.
He is more likely to be placed with violent criminals, including wihite supremacist groups who Madoff and his legal team believe will target him because he is Jewish.
Madoff may now serve time at the ‘Supermax’ jail in Colorado, alongside convicted terrorists, if the judge determines he must be kept in secure conditions for his own safety.
