A long-range - probably Iranian-built - rocket was launched towards Tel Aviv from Gaza on Tuesday.

Sirens sounded in Tel Aviv as the missile was brought down south of the city by the Iron Dome defence system. Islamic Jihad claim responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, Gadera, Be’er Sheva and Ashkelon came under sustained rocket fire from Gaza.

An IDF spokesperson confirmed they had intercepted many of the 130 missiles sent from Gaza in the previous 24 hours.

The Israeli military has now called up 40,000 reservists, on the understanding that a land strike may be imminent. Air and sea strikes were launched early Tuesday morning as part of Operation Protection Edge, a counter-offensive against Hamas.

Both Eilat airport and Herzliya’s Sde Dov airport, north of Tel Aviv, cancelled all scheduled flights.

Meanwhile, a group of suspected Hamas terrorists attempted to infiltrate Israel near Zikim, north of Gaza. An IDF unit was reportedly engaged in a firefight, with some reports suggesting two terrorists had been killed.
