Jewish leader attacks Jean-Marie Le Pen over 'oven' comment

articlemain

A Jewish group has called on Front National founder Jean-Marie Le Pen to be stripped of his parliamentary immunity as an MEP.

The call follows a reference to ovens in comments on Mr Le Pen's website about the popular French-Jewish singer, Patrick Bruel.

"On fera une fournee la prochaine fois" (next time we'll make a batch), Mr Le Pen said. The phrase is a play on the word "fournée" or "le four" which translates as oven.

European Jewish Congress President Dr Moshe Kantor said the European Union should strip Jean-Marie Le Pen of his parliamentary immunity and charge him with inciting racial hatred.

"The European Union should fight back by demonstrating zero tolerance for racial incitement," Mr Kantor said. "It can begin by stripping Le Pen of any immunity for prosecution he might hold as an MEP for these comments."

Louis Aliot, FN vice president and partner of his daughter Marine Le Pen strongly criticised Le Pen senior, describing his remarks as "politically stupid and worrying".

In response, Mr Le Pen said: "I saw Mr Aliot's reaction; if there are people of my own camp who interpret it in that manner, its because they are imbeciles. He added: "I don't have to answer to him".

Marine Le Pen had attempted to distance the party from its far right roots, threatening to sue anyone calling the group "extremist". Until now the strategy appeared to have been working with the FN winning the European elections with 25 per cent of the vote in France last month.

Four days before last month's European Elections, Mr Le Pen was in trouble again over racist comments he suggesting that immigration to France could be solved with the African Ebola virus.
