The Jewish Agency for Israel has announced it will seek to provide educational and cultural assistance to Bahrain's Jewish community, following the normalisation of political ties between the two nations last week.

Speaking via phonecall on Saturday night, Isaac Herzog discussed collaborating with Ebrahim Nonoo, the head of the Jewish community in Bahrain - which is believed to number around 50.

In a statement, the agency said Mr Nonoo asked to be provided with the tools to “enhance Jewish identity and cultivate community life.”

Mr Herzog said that he was “happy to congratulate my friend of many years, Ebrahim Nonoo, who will soon be able to visit Israel freely with his family.

“The Jewish Agency can now support another Jewish community in the Middle East, just as we support all Jewish communities around the world.”

A team lead by Jewish Agency CEO Amira Ahronoviz will be established in the coming days to work with the Jewish community in Bahrain.

Mr Herzog also congratulated the leaders of the two nations and the United States for the political agreement that had allowed for the collaboration.

On Friday, US president Donald Trump announced the two nations would normalise political ties - the second to do so following the United Arab Emirates in August.
