The Italian Football Federation has been fined more than £24,000 after its fans made Nazi salutes and shouted antisemitic insults at opposition fans during a match with Israel.

Fifa was sent an official complaint by the Israeli Football Association after the match on September 5, during which Italian fans also made offensive gestures and spat at Israeli supporters.

Two men in the Italian section of the stadium were removed from the premises while Italy beat Israel 3-1, though they were not arrested.

The world governing body of football said the decision was taken because of “discriminatory and unsporting conduct by fans,” but did not enter into specifics.
