(JNS) Shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sacked Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for breaking ranks to condemn his reforms, Israel’s top diplomat in New York handed in his resignation.

“The past 18 months as Israel’s consul general in New York were fulfilling and rewarding, but following today’s developments, it is now time for me to join the fight for Israel’s future to ensure it remains a beacon of democracy and freedom in the world,” Asaf Zamir wrote on Twitter Sunday.

Zamir shared a letter, in which he wrote that he quits “with a heavy heart” the “greatest honor and privilege” of serving as Israel’s representative in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Delaware.
