A statement from Mr Bennett’s office today read, “ Prime Minister Naftali Bennett spoke today with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“The two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, with an emphasis on the Kiev region.

“PM Bennett offered Israel's assistance with any humanitarian aid needed and updated President Zelenskyy on the steps already taken in this regard.

“PM reiterated his hope for a speedy end to the fighting, and said that he stands by the people of Ukraine in these difficult days.”

Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, took to Twitter this morning to report “horrific Russian rocket strikes on Kyiv” .

He wrote, "Last time our capital experienced anything like this was in 1941 when it was attacked by Nazi Germany."

Reuters reports that Mr Zelenskiy - who is in Kiev - said in a video message he believes the “enemy has marked me down as the number one target.”

He added, “My family is the number two target. They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of state.”
