Israel stood still and silent at 10 am this morning as the country remembered the six million who died in the Holocaust.

Also to mark Yom Hashoah, the national day of remembrance, ceremonies were held across the country, including a wreath laying at Yad Vashem attended by President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a large number of officials, from the Mayor of Jerusalem to the chairman of the World Zionist Organisation.

The names of victims of the Holocaust were read in both the Knesset and in Yad Vashem’s Hall of Remembrance.

The opening ceremony for Yom Hashoah was held last night at Yad Vashem, with six torches commemorating the victims lit by six survivors and a memorial service led by Israel’s most senior rabbis.
