The re-elected mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, wore a Star of David at his swearing-in ceremony last week.
During the event, supporters of the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn and anti-fascist activists chanted slogans at each other from opposite balconies.
Mr Boutaris (below) had pinned to his lapel a flyer bearing the Star of David and the word "Jude", which had been distributed by city councillor and ecologist Eleanna Ioannidou.
Ms Ioannidou had handed out the flyers in response to the election of Golden Dawn members to the city council. She wanted to remind city residents that 50,000 Thessaloniki Jews were murdered by the Nazis.
