Comedian Dieudonné, who has several convictions in France for inciting hatred of Jews and mocking the Holocaust, is taking the president of the French Jewish umbrella group to court for accusing him of antisemitism.
Roger Cukierman, president of the French council of Jewish institutions, went before a magistrate this week after Dieudonné filed a complaint against him for defamation.
Mr Cukierman is accused of calling Dieudonné a "professional antisemite" on French radio station Europe 1 and for describing the comedian's "quenelle" gesture as a Nazi salute on RTL radio. Under French law, all official complaints must be dealt with in court.
Mr Cukierman responded in a YouTube video: "I am being investigated for calling Dieudonné a professional antisemite, isn't that amusing? For once, Dieudonné is being funny.
"I won't take back anything I said because I was telling the truth. I am proud of having denounced the damage that Dieudonné does to our youth."
A court date has not yet been set.
