A BuzzFeed article praising Israelis for using everyday items to defend themselves against terrorist attacks has been taken down because it supports a “political agenda.”
“Seven Unbelievable Israeli Defence Technologies That Could Save Your Life” was removed from the Community section of the site - an open platform which anyone can contribute to - a few hours after being posted.
The article, which featured “technologies” like umbrellas and selfie sticks, was written on Wednesday by Times of Israel contributing writer Eylon Aslan-Levy after a terror attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday was briefly held up when a busker hit an attacker with his guitar.
US graduate student Taylor Force was killed during the attack.
The BuzzFeed piece began: “If ever you’re attacked by a knife-wielding terrorist, these seven incredible Israeli innovations could save your life, tried and tested over five months of near-daily Palestinian attacks in Israel.
“They don’t call Israel the Start-Up Nation for nothing.”
A BuzzFeed spokeswoman explained: “The post was deemed political and graphic in nature by our Community team and therefore violated guidelines.
She added that “BuzzFeed is no longer supporting new posts from Community Brand Publisher accounts, which include any accounts with a political, commercial, or promotional agenda.”
Writing on Facebook, Mr Aslan-Levy said the decision was taken “because Jews defending their own lives from Arab terrorism is still a controversial proposition. So it'll be back up on Times of Israel instead soon.”
