A mile away from the United Nations’ headquarters, 600 Jewish delegates from more than 90 countries met at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan to collaborate on the most pressing issues facing global Jewry.
“It’s essentially a Jewish United Nations,” said Jonathan Arkush, Board of Deputies president and a vice-president of the World Jewish Congress.
The WJC, which was founded in 1936, kicked off its quadrennial event on Sunday night with president Ronald Lauder bashing the UN and its long history of anti-Israel bias. “But then all that changed,” pronounced Mr Lauder, “the moment Antonio Guterres became the Secretary General of the UN.”
Mr Guterres, former prime minister of Portugal, spoke eloquently of his personal connection to the Jewish people, but it was his strong support for Israel that earned him a standing ovation.
