Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Paysandú, in north-western Uruguay, last Saturday to protest over the murder of local Jewish businessman David Fremd.
Mr Fremd, 55, was stabbed to death on Monday last week. He was buried three days later and the shops in the city's Reus district - known as the Jewish Quarter - were closed in his honour.
The suspected killer, Carlos Omar Peralta, 35, is in custody in Paysandú. Uruguayan Interior Minister Eduardo Bonomi said a search of Peralta's home had uncovered materials related to Islam, although none of these indicated radicalisation, and any link with foreign organisations had been ruled out.
Uruguay's President, Tabaré Vázquez, sent a letter to Jewish leader Sergio Gorzy and Mr Fremd's family, expressing his sorrow. Security has been tightened at Jewish schools around the country.
