A former Iran detainee’s Russian Israeli husband allegedly cheated on her while she was serving time in the country, a report claims.

The British Australian academic, Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert, was freed last year after being imprisoned in Iran for more than 800 days on espionage charges.

According to the Sunday Herald Sun, she filed for divorce upon her return to Melbourne after discovering her husband’s alleged relationship.

She wed Ruslan Hodorov in 2017, and the pair had a traditional Jewish wedding, according to media reports. She was a Tikvah Israel fellow and spent some time in Israel learning Hebrew, according to a 2011 brochure.

He reportedly began having an affair with a colleague of hers, Dr Kylie Baxter, a year after his wife’s arrest in Tehran, according to the report, which cites friends of the couple.

The Australian outlet also claims the former detainee managed to resist an Islamic Revolutionary Guard plot to entrap her husband, also wrongly suspected of being a spy.

Ms Moore-Gilbert, a Middle Eastern studies expert, was detained in 2018 as she attempted to leave Iran following a local conference.

She was convicted of espionage charges, which she always denied, and sentenced to 10 years behind bars before she was freed last year.

Her release was part of a prisoner swap, according to Iranian media.

“I honestly do not know where to start or how I can ever thank you for all of your incredible efforts to campaign for my release,” she wrote on Twitter after her release.

“I am totally blown away by everything you have done for me, I honestly have no words to express the depth of my gratitude and how touched I am."
