World Jewish Relief has launched an emergency appeal for Ukraine’s Jewish community to help them survive the sub-zero temperatures this winter.
Although the WJR Rosh Hashanah appeal raised £161,125 – almost 90 per cent of the targeted £181,380 – for the Ukraine community, the dire conditions still faced by many Jews have led to a second emergency appeal being launched this week.
Paul Anticoni, World Jewish Relief chief executive, said: "We know that whenever there's a humanitarian emergency in the world, the British Jewish community is quick to respond.
“I'm appealing to the community to support our emergency appeal for Ukraine's Jews. Thousands are homeless, with no possessions. Another bitterly cold winter lies ahead.”
Donations received will go towards rebuilding homes, providing fuel supplies and winter clothing, as well as training programmes to help get people back into work.
The money received from the Rosh Hashanah appeal has allowed WJR to provide food, water, clothing and shelter to hundreds who have had to flee their homes amid fighting between Ukrainian nationalists and Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.
The city of Mariupol has been evacuated, with thousands of Jews moved to safety.
