Jewish rock stars have rarely touched on Jewish themes in their music.
Bob Dylan alluded briefly to the binding of Isaac in Highway 61 Revisited.
The West coast band Spirit reworked Hinei Ma Tov in a track called Jewish, featuring a sublime piece of guitar from the late, great Randy California (aka Randy Craig Wolfe).
But one of the most explicitly Jewish songs has just appeared from New York group Vampire Weekend (below), fronted by Ezra Koenig. About the loss of religious belief, its title Ya Hey refers to God and its lyrics includes the refrain “Through the fire and through the flames/ You won’t even say your name”.
