The man who carried out the attempted assassination on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, posted violent antisemitic content online as a teenager.

A senior FBI official, speaking at a US Senate hearing on Tuesday, said material posted by Thomas Crooks included antisemitic and anti-immigration content.

FBI deputy director Paul Abbate said the account dated from 2019 to 2020, which would have made Crooks 15 or 16 years old at the time of the posts.

Abbate said: “Some of these comments, if ultimately attributable to the shooter, appear to reflect antisemitic and anti-immigration themes to espouse political violence and are described as extreme in nature.”

Trump suffered only minor injuries when a bullet grazed his ear during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month. One bystander was killed. The would-be assassin, Crooks, 20, was shot and killed at the scene.

Investigators have described Crooks as a loner with no close friends and a social network limited mainly to immediate family members.
