Board deputy Nina Freedman has been elected president of the Union of Jewish Students.

Ms Freedman, 20, who is reading English at the University of Bristol, will take up her role in June after winning the student union’s annual presidential race, securing over 50 percent of votes cast in the fourth round.

The former Yavneh College head girl, who is a member of Elstree and Borehamwood shul, ran against three students vying to succeed president James Harris and pledged to “reconnect UJS”.

Measures in her manifesto included monthly Q&A sessions, an alumni network and a student wellbeing hotline manned by a trained sabbatical officer.

She  is a former J-Soc president and currently represents UJS on the Board of Deputies. The umbrella group congratulated Ms Freedman and said it looked forward to working with her.

The president-elect, who grew up in north west London, said it had been a “really good year.”

“With a broad range of opinions and it shows how great UJS’ democracy is. I am very excited to go forward into next year into leading UJS with these values,” she said.

Mr Harris congratulated all candidates and said he looked forward to “seeing the great things” that Ms Freedman will do to support students.

“Under Nina’s leadership, we will indeed see UJS continuing to lead, defend and enrich the lives of Jewish students on campus to ensure that there truly are, as my late predecessor Alan Senitt z”l said, more Jewish students doing more Jewish things,’” he said.
