The Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has sent a Chanukah message to Britain’s Jews, stressing the contrast between the festival of light and the continuing crisis triggered by the October 7 attacks.

“As Jews around the world mark Chanukah, we all feel the contrast between the darkness of recent times and the light of this festival,” his message begins. "It is in these times that moments with loved ones are so deeply cherished.”

Starmer, whose wife, Victoria and their three children are Jewish, has often spoken of the role Judaism plays in his family’s life.

His message continues: “In our household, Chanukah is a time for celebrating, and spending quality time with each other. Like other families across the world, we will mark the beginning of the festival by lighting the first candle on the menorah, and enjoying a doughnut or two.

"So, as we come together to observe Chanukah, may the candles of this Festival of Lights bring hope to us all.

"Chanukah Sameach."
