Meghan Markle’s “close” university friend has defended the Duchess of Sussex in the wake of bullying allegations.

Lindsay Roth, a producer for Larry King Now, said she met Ms Markle while studying at Northwestern University and that they remained close friends for over two decades.

According to media reports, Ms Roth is Jewish and entrusted the former Suits star to be her maid of honour at a partly Jewish wedding in New York in 2016.

“Meg’s M.O. has always been kindness, goodwill runs in her bones. I know this to be true after 22 years of very close friendship. I have seen firsthand how she treats her friends and their families, and her colleagues,” Ms Roth wrote on Instagram on Thursday.

She added: “If you ever have the pleasure of meeting Meg - and I hope more of you do - you will see the altruistic, magnanimous friend who I am so lucky to have in my corner.

“She’s funny. Like laugh out loud funny. And smart. She’s more than just a cover story.”

Buckingham Palace said on Wednesday they would be launching an investigation into the claims, reported by The Times, that Ms Markle bullied former royal employees.

Ms Markle pushed back against the bullying allegations, with a spokesperson calling them a "personal attack."

The allegations have added to the royal drama engulfing the Sussexes ahead of their interview with Oprah Winfrey, which is set to air in the UK on Monday evening.
