A Jewish Oxford graduate has been named the young cartoonist of the year after her entry satirising Theresa May’s handling of Brexit caught the eye of the country’s top cartoonists.

Ella Baron, 21, received the award from the British Cartoonist Association after her work was judged the best by an artist under the age of 30.

Her cartoon, A Room with a View Brexit Edition, was a satire of the Prime Minister’s speech in Florence and Britain’s break with the EU.

Ms Baron, a member of New London Synagogue, said she is looking forward to trying to make it in an industry in which other cartoonists have worked in the same jobs “for longer than I’ve been alive”.

After working for Cherwell, Oxford’s student newspaper, the English literature graduate is preparing to begin a series of sketches for The Times Literary Supplement.

Ms Baron said: “I had sketches published before, but this was the first time I thought I could make this into a career. Sitting here drawing Trump all day - and making a living from it - is very enjoyable. I really love it.”
