The Community Security Trust has advised Jewish organisations to maintain strict security measures amid “extremely high tensions” following the assasination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
The charity, which protects communal buildings in Britain, said that while the request was not based upon any specific intelligence or advance warnings, “there is a long history of anti-Jewish terrorism around the world.”
The CST added: "CST hopes and expects that communal locations, organisations etc. will have been following security procedures since the Hamas terrorist attacks of 7 October, the subsequent war in the Middle East and the rise in antisemitism here in Britain.
“This notice from CST is a strong reminder that security procedures must continue, especially given the extremely high tensions between Iran and Israel. The latest developments mean it is essential that security procedures are fully implemented.”
Jews in the UK are advised to keep their gates and doors closed at all times, be alert for suspicious people and activities, and report suspicious people, while challenging them if it is safe to do so.
They are further advised to avoid congregating outside communal buildings and events, prevent people who try to "tailgate" behind them through doors, and referesh their knowledge of emergency procedures.
The warning comes after Haniyeh was killed while visiting Tehran in an attack seemingly launched by Israel.
Speaking to the JC, former intelligence advisor to the UK cabinet office Dr Lynette Nusbacher said Jews are at a greater risk than normal around the world.
“The Iranians have vowed vengeance and retribution for this attack, and we know the Iranians are willing to target not only Israelis but Jews globally,” she said.
"They will go for soft targets. Israelis and Jews globally are soft targets.”
