'We believe she... did not intentionally use antisemitic language. We are sorry to see that the whole matter has caused distress'

Conservative MP Suella Braverman is "in no way antisemitic", the Board of Deputies has declared after meeting her amid concern about her denouncing "cultural Marxism", a word with anti-Jewish origins.

Ms Braverman used the phrase at a public event of Brexiteers last week where she attacked said she and her allies were "engaged in a battle against Cultural Marxism... which has come from Jeremy Corbyn".

The Board criticised her for using an "antisemitic trope" but on Wednesday, a Board spokesperson said it had held a "productive discussion" with her and found she "is clearly a good friend of the Jewish community".

"We believe she is in no way antisemitic and did not intentionally use antisemitic language. We are sorry to see that the whole matter has caused distress," they added.

The phrase, which has become more popular among alt-right and far-right activists in recent years, was used by the Nazis, who described “Kulturbolschewismus” when they sought to accuse Jewish intellectuals of orchestrating the spread of Communism, as well as sexual permissiveness.

When Ms Braverman used the word, it was pointed out to her the phrase appeared in the manifesto of far-right terrorist Anders Brevik.

But she doubled down, saying: "No one can get offended anymore. We are living in a culture where we are putting everybody in cotton wool. Our risk-averse mentalities are taking over.

"And that instinct for freedom, for risk-taking, for making a mistake, for innovation, for creativity is being killed. And it's absolutely damaging for our spirit as British people and our genius — that British genius."
