Socialite Philip Sallon is recovering after he suffered a fractured skull in an assault.

Mr Sallon was punched, kicked and stamped on after being approached by two men in Piccadilly Circus in the early hours of April 2.

A fixture on the London club scene, Mr Sallon is renowned for his flamboyant dress sense.

Witnesses reported hearing the attackers shout anti-gay abuse. The 59-year-old was knocked unconscious and was treated in hospital for a number of days.

Police are investigating the attack and remain open-minded about the motive. It is understood no witnesses have come forward and there is no CCTV footage of the incident.

The son of veteran newspaper cartoonist Ralph Sallon, Philip became famous in the 1980s as part of the legendary glam rock scene centred around performers such as his friend, Boy George.

Mr Sallon founded the Mud Club in Tottenham Court Road. He and Boy George – real name George O'Dowd – have been friends since they were 15.

Following the attack, Boy George said he believed it to be a homophobic assault.

He said: "In the last 10 years we have seen lots of attacks in the West End. This wasn't a squabble, he was kicked repeatedly in the face, he could have been killed."

He Tweeted on Sunday night that Mr Sallon was recovering and was "brighter", but would "need to rest up for a while".
