Dayan Yonason Abraham, who suddenly stepped down from the London Beth Din earlier this week, has resigned from the synagogue he helped to found.
In a letter circulated to members of the Toras Chaim Synagogue in Hendon on Friday, he said that he had “fallen short of the standards expected of me” and was “deeply sorry that I have let you down.”
He said he was resigning as its rabbi with “immediate effect”.
Dayan Abraham said he had been “under exceptional strain and stress for some time which has taken its inevitable toll. I have spent my life helping others including some wonderful friends and supporters in this kehillah (congregation) of which I am so proud. I now need to help myself and my family.”
He asked congregants to respect his and his family’s privacy.
Toras Chaim, opened in 2004, has been a popular congregation with young professionals and was colloquially known as the “Cash and Carry Minyan”, as it supported the use of the North-West London eruv which was approved by the London Beth Din but rejected by a number of Charedi rabbis.
Dayan Abraham is also understood to have pulled out from a speaking engagement in Manchester on Monday.
