The Muslim Council of Britain has sent a message of support to the Jewish community following last week’s terror attack on a kosher supermarket in Paris.
In a statement on Saturday, the organisation said that it stood “united in its solidarity with the Jewish community”.
Unfolding events in Paris over the past few days had “undoubtedly horrified everyone, not least Muslims from around the world,” it said. “We must work hard to defy those who wish to divide communities.
“We echo the reaction of France's President Francois Hollande who said: ‘Those who committed these acts, these fanatics, have nothing to do with the Muslim faith’. Unity, as the French President has rightly said, is our best weapon.”
The council added that it was "reaching out to Jewish organisations here in Britain to offer its support at this difficult time”.
The statement follows last summer’s unprecedented joint declaration against antisemitism signed jointly by the Board of Deputies and the MCB.
In further evidence of improved links between the two organisations, MCB general secretary Shua Shafi attended a reception last week hosted by the Board to honour the Church of England’s outgoing interfaith adviser.
